Take care of the end-of-life of equipment
The useful life of equipment depends on many factors and may vary greatly over the years. At the end of its lifecycle, rental companies handle their equipment in a sustainable manner benefitting both society and their company.
Suggested actions for rental companies:
- Inspect the state of conservation of all equipment.
- Sell your equipment on the second hand market if it is repairable or in good working condition, but no longer meets the standards of the European rental market.
- For equipment beyond good working conditions, dismantle it and recover, sort and salvage the different components.

Loxam recovers and centralizes all used caterpillar tracks in the French network (416 tonnes in 2015) to be recycled. Once separated, 80% of the rubber is recovered to make noise-reducing road surfacing sub-layers to reduce vibrations, and therefore noise, while 100% of stainless steel is melted down.
In 2015 the HSS Group opened their new purpose-build refurbishment centre in Manchester. This facility improves their refurbishment capability by 50% to a total of 800 machines a year. Since, on average, equipment can be used for an additional five years after refurbishing, this allows the HSS Group to add an additional 4,000 years of equipment usage in 2016 alone!
Considering this significant advantage, the HSS Group has made refurbishment a crucial part of their sustainable business model. Through investments and acquisition, the HSS Group is now able to refurbish almost all of its fleet, including large and highly specialist equipment.
The HSS Group’s refurbishment centre has been designed with a commitment to environmentally-friendly operations. It includes overhead lifting capacity, dedicated engine and welding areas, waste and component recycling and extraction equipment. As such this centre allows them to maximally benefit from its refurbishing capacity.
